Flea Bites On Humans
Apart from plaguing
and sucking off the blood from animals, fleas
bite humans too. Among all other insect bites,
flea bites on humans are also one of the most
common ones. There are many varieties of fleas
that bite humans including cat fleas, dog
fleas and human fleas. With the use of their
jaws, these fleas cut into the skin of the
people and release their saliva which contains
anticoagulants and harmful enzymes. The role
of these anticoagulants is to stop blood from
clotting on the skin, the condition which
helps the fleas to suck on blood. The harmful
enzymes that are released by the saliva of
fleas cause the allergic reactions seen on
most of the people.
Flea bites on humans are generally seen near
the ankles and other lower portions of legs.
It usually appears in the form of a red spot
that may last for a few hours or days, depending
on the person’s allergic reaction to
it. Some people feel a slight itching or irritation
on the bites, while others encounter extreme
allergic reactions including breaking out
into hives or having excess swelling. Skin
of human children is very soft and sensitive,
therefore, flea bites on their skin is generally
more malicious than in adults. Before running
to a doctor,
you can try the following home
remedies for fleas in case of mild allergy:
1) First of all, wash the affected part of
the body with a gentle antiseptic detergent
or soap.
2) You can also put an ice-pack on the affected
area that will help to reduce swelling, itching
and inflammation.
3) You can also apply a little calamine lotion
which will help in relieving itching.
4) A mild and gentle steroid cream such as
hydrocortisone can also be applied on the
bite which will help in reducing the swelling
and itching more quickly.
To get rid of fleas can be a difficult task,
which needs a good and integrated plan including
treating the animals, cleaning the entire
house, garden and backyard, vacuuming the
house regularly and thoroughly washing all
the fabrics in the home including curtain,
rugs and carpets, which are frequently contacted
by the infested pets. All these efforts need
great persistence and endeavour, but that
will be a worth while when you will finally
declare that your home is free from fleas
and their bites, and that you have provided
security to yourself and your family members.
