Prevention
And Treatment Of Dog Fleas
Fleas can live
on both your pet cats and dogs and can cause
great nuisance to them. Dog Fleas are called
Ctenocephalides Canis and is similar to cat
fleas. Humans are attacked by cat fleas more
often than the dog fleas. Dogs get infested
with fleas when they get in contact with other
animals or with the fleas present in the environment.
Many times we may not even get to know that
our dogs are infested with fleas and then
you also have to suffer along with your pet.
Dog Fleas look like small dark brown insects
which can be easily spotted on the skin coat
of dogs. But if you looking for the big ones,
then you have to go through places which are
dark and offer warm environment like the pet’s
belly, inner thighs and unreachable areas.
Even flea dirt can be spotted which looks
like small pepper seeds; it is the flea feces
composed of digested food. If there is flea
dirt on your pet and its beddings then you
have to believe that fleas have infested your
pet.
Fleas want a warm and humid environment for
their production and dog’s fur coat
is the best place. They have strong legs which
can make them jump to height of two feet and
can hop around from one host to another. Flea
bite in dogs is characterized by itching which
might lead to hair loss, inflammation and
other skin reactions. Flea bite can also result
in red patches around the tail. Flea’s
saliva can cause severe allergy to your dog.
There are chemical and non chemical methods
to get rid off dog fleas. The most common
methods are flea combs and flea shampoos.
Bathe your dog in flea shampoos or mild shampoos
which will drown the fleas. You can spray
insect growth regulators on dogs and the areas
infested with fleas which are not harmful
for you as well as for the dog. After dog’s
treatment, its time to treat your house as
fleas might have infested your house also.
You can use vacuum cleaners to clean the nook
and corners which are the hiding place for
fleas. Bedding of the dog should be washed
thoroughly with insecticide and detergents.
There is no sure shot way of curing flea bites
and infestation, only thing that you can do
is to take all preventive measure which can
save you and your dog from itchy sensations
and scratch.
