The problem of flea infestation

Pets are vulnerable to fleas as they provide fleas with appropriate conditions to breed. This means that you also have the chances of experiencing flea bites which can cause redness or irritation. Fleas are parasitic in nature; they live off on the blood of humans and animals. Fleas attack host’s body by their proboscis, using their jaw they transfer salvia in the blood vessels which contain anti-coagulants and enzymes. These enzymes can cause allergic reactions in the host body and anti-coagulants don’t let the blood to clot which makes it easy for fleas to suck blood.

Fleas require warm weather for breeding, so pets, dark nooks and corners, cracks, couch and carpet are their breeding grounds. If you are able to detect fleas on your pet then its time you start a war against flea infestation. One can get to know about flea infestation if you suffer with bite marks on ankles and lower portion of the leg. Another symptom of flea infestation is flea dirt on your pet. You can comb your dog’s skin coat on a white paper tissue which will show you small pepper like seeds which is the excreta of the fleas.

Flea infestation can be very harmful as they will cause allergic reaction in you and your pets. Flea bites can cause skin allergies called FAD or flea allergy dermatitis causing irritation, inflammation and loss of hair. Flea bites might be small in size but can cause great irritation and infection in that particular area. They are also carrier of tape worms which can cause gastric problems. In some cases, anemia can occur due to extensive blood loss in dogs.

You can get rid of fleas through prevention and more prevention. The most widely used method to get rid of fleas is flea combs and flea shampoos. Bathe you dog with flea shampoos or other mild detergents which will kill the fleas by drowning. Combing your dog with a flea comb or putting flea collars can also help you in making your dog flea free. The bedding and those areas which your dog visits frequently should be sprayed with insect growth regulators and if possible should be washed with water. The house is the next place which should be thoroughly cleaned by using vacuum cleaners. Shrubs and bushes should be trimmed and kept clean. One thing should be remembered for fighting fleas is to keep yourself, your dog and surroundings clean.
